IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers Steps Down

India-based low-cost airline IndiGo has announced that CEO Pieter Elbers has stepped down from his position. According to the company’s statement, Elbers’ departure took effect on March 10, 2026.

The Board of Directors thanked Elbers for his contributions during his tenure and wished him success in his future endeavors.

IndiGo Chairman Vikram Singh Mehta stated that Rahul Bhatia, Managing Director and co-founder of IndiGo, will temporarily oversee the airline’s operations until a new CEO is appointed. The company expects to announce a new leader in the near future.

Mehta said Bhatia’s return to lead the airline aims to strengthen the company’s culture, reinforce operational excellence, and further enhance the quality of service provided to customers.

Rahul Bhatia noted that IndiGo was founded 22 years ago and emphasized that the airline will continue operating with a strong sense of responsibility toward its passengers, employees, shareholders, and other stakeholders. He added that IndiGo will maintain its focus on delivering reliable operations and professional management while serving India and its people.

With a fleet of more than 400 aircraft, IndiGo operates over 2,200 daily flights, connecting more than 95 domestic and 40 international destinations. The airline carried 124 million passengers in 2025 and was named “Best Airline in India and South Asia” at the Skytrax World Airline Awards 2025.
